Fanime-Con 2k2
April 29, 2002 @ 10:04 am
Fanime 2002 Location: Same 'ole Westin Hotel in Santa Clara
Okay, let me start off by saying that I came to this con expecting to do some cosplay, meet some people, and have some fun. Of those three, I believe the last of them was the only one I succeeded at to any degree. Since I forced myself to not bring a camera (saving for digital), I lack the wonderful pictures that others will be posting. I do, however, offer a perspective on the convention that isn't always seen. That perspective is the behind the scenes view, from the point of a Volunteer (Vol). While not originally in my list of things to do, one look at the hole, and all the memories I had from the year before compelled me to go in again. A few moments later, I had a second badge and had signed away at least 14 hours of my life. So here is my story, From Friday to Sunday, here is what was going on from one Volunteer that managed to be almost everywhere and helped do a lot of things.…

what do you do at night?
April 24, 2002 @ 01:04 pm
Okay, so I am in ID again, and today's topic is speed. More appropriately, the fact my life is moving at a very high one and shows no signs of slowing any time soon. I spent yesterday in class, yesterday night at the beach, and today in meetings and budget hearings. On the upside, I may be getting a stipend increase next year. On the down side, I won't be getting enough pay for all the shit I went through this year in an attempt to get a financial hold on things.
So why did I go to the beach? To think actually. If you drive far enough south past Carmel, the road starts to wind along the coast (Highway 1). There you can find a nice spot to pull off and walk down to the ocean. The part I picked was a way out, and the trail wasn't as good as the others. Which is okay, since I wasn't keen on people following me. The moon gave enough light to see by, so I could see where the trail was washed off down the cliff. It wasn't steep or anything, but it probably would have hurt. I got a call from Marce that almost made me slip when climbing down, but I talked to her once I finished (4 foot drop). The cove ruined my cellular signal, so I had to hang up, climb out, and call her back. I then found a small protected area from the wind and talked to Marce for a while.…
Chi No Tsuki and Japan Center
April 22, 2002 @ 09:04 am
I was just too damned tired to write yesterday and spill out about all the fun that was my weekend. Saturday was pretty slow, which was okay. Sunday, I went places.
It started with the shooting for Chi No Tsuki, which was cancelled do to our group missing someone (Pip) who was a pivotal piece of the shot. So, that ruined filming, and we scrapped it and will try and do it two weekends out. After that, Kryn declares he wants to go to Castro to get a book on Japanese rope bondage. Sine it had been a while since I had gone to SF, I figured sure, why not. As we start assembling a group, Mariah suggests we go to Haight Street as well. Now there is somewhere I have been longing to go to for a while now. There are things there that are just plain hard to find anywhere else. So I got a collar, another one that is also black and has 3 spikes on either side of the ring, a yak pak (thank you Fred for the recommendation to get it), and a shirt that is just well...not normal. A green w/ black hood. It looks pretty nice.…

Some days, it just doesn't pay to wake up. This was one of those days. I woke up early, rolled over, fell back asleep. I then got up for meetings, class, more meetings, even more meetings, and well, yeah. That was about it.
I have to be up at 6:00 am to reserve a place to live next year. Sounds exciting? No, didn't think so. I would write more, but in the interest of public journal, I shaln't.…
1 hour before
April 16, 2002 @ 10:04 am
It is about 1 hour before I turn in my HCOM paper. As luck would have it, my Service Learning class would get out early. That wouldn't be so bad, except that in doing this, it puts a major kink in my schedule for a Tuesday. All of a sudden, I have this hole. And the hole isn't big enough to go back to my room, nor is it big enough to go scour for food. It is too long to just sit here and type, but too short for any major projects. I will likely grab a soda, finish my notes for my Spanish presentation, stop by building 44 to talk to Ruth about Student Oritentaion (and get my OL packet), and just waste away an hour of my life.
Damnit, I need that hour!…

Today was a film day. I slept all of 3 or so hours, and awoke to the sun and stared at my ceiling. Before I knew it, it was almost noon, and time to go with Makari over to Derrick's for the filming of Chi no Tski. That consumed form noon until 7.
The evening was supposed to consist of going with G and Karen and everyone to celebrate Karen's birthday. Jake dropped me off at KAren's house (we took his car for filming), and he drove off. I got to the door and nobody was home. So I called. They left and went to the beach. So I started the long walk back to campus. I think I got a few dozen steps in before Sheyne stopped by and offered a ride, some chill time, and such. Since I had no way of getting out to the beach, and wasn't keen on walking all the way back to campus, I went ahead and chilled there for a while.…

My arms hurt. But then again, I haven't twirled glowsticks in so long, I had thought I'd forgotten how.
The occasion was Karen's 21st, and while she wanted to get sloshed, she didn't want to deny us under 21 people all the fun. So we instead went to a place called "The Body Shop" in San Jose. It would have been fun, it should have been fun, but it was Hip Hop, and not of the nerdcore style. I remember now four very important aspects of Hip Hop nightclubs..,things I also noticed at the Classic Jukebox back home.…

New look for a new mood. Yeah, that's it. Actually I design to escape. Lets me think about other things while I putz in Dreamweaver and Photoshop. It's for the same reasons that I code. Number based and logic based problems are so much easier than those involving the big L.
My task list grows by the hour, making it very hard to make headway into it. I got about halfway through it, including most of my correspondence. Have one thing left for ICC, a few for school, and it is only 2 in the morning. I seem to be ahead of schedule.…

Well, I passed on lunch and sleep in order to have everything ready for this week. If everything goes well, I think it will be worth the sacrifice / trade off.
Low Fat Snack Food Theater starts this next Sunday. It will be a once a week comic type thing. Makari and I will have the low down on the down low... or something like that. I get a feeling I will be updating about as often as Piro at this rate. o.O Now that is pretty disturbing. I did however, write a workaround for the wonderful Keenspace tools. A little CGI here, a little modification of HTML there, and before you know it, BOOM you have a workaround. What exactly was I trying to do? Well, for some reason Keenspace wouldn't let me use SSI, which (I might add) is the whole reason for this workaround to begin with. If I could include oh, say a NEWS file on my page, we wouldn't have this issue. But, since that isn't an option, I dropped the index template (now to be updated by Greymatter) and am using just the daily template for updating a la Keen. The result is something like penny-arcade, only with topics like Megatokyo, the art of Jim days on RPG World, more anime, games, and general bullshit than you can fathom, and it is being written by Jake and Jakob.…

Hmm, somehow the weekend flew by, although I am still trying to figure out how. We had today off in honor of Ceaser Chavéz. We don't get Lincoln's Birthday, but we do get this. There is a certain level of irony in it falling on April 1st, but I will save that for a later date, as I have a lot of updating and writing to do.
Let us backtrack to Friday, when we held a SW RPG session. It went rather well actually, and I was very impressed with the end results from the group. Everything seems to be coming together nicely, although the group is moving a bit too fast for me to be able to work with. I like to stay at least a few scenes ahead, and that buffer has been stripped from me unfortunately. So I made do, resorted to handwriting GM notes and drawing maps on graph paper, trying to make the most of it all. It seemed to work. We finished late, and I was destined to get up early for Great America.…
