I thought dating sims were a joke

For anyone that was trying to get to my web site in the past 24 hours or so, I apologize. Some major repair work was needed, but things are back up and running smooth again (including the FOG Board for those that use it).

I spent the morning playing Skies of Arcadia. I declared this game a lot of fun back when I started with an airship. I now tack on to that you get to have your own base. It reminds me of Breath of Fire II actually; a secret hideout from which I can wage war against an evil empire. Actually a lot of things in this game remind me of Breath of Fire, but in a fun and refreshing way (not the rehashed shoot me now way).

Now, on to the main part of this entry, which happens to also be about video games. Not just any game, but the Love Hina video game.

This morning when I was up and moving, after having gone over to Sherylen's to spend some time with her and work on a few things, I went over to Charles' house to ask about the provider and see if there were some server modifications I hadn't gotten an e-mail about. It turns out the upgrade to Apache 2 wasn't as smooth as he had hoped for. Anyway, while I was there, I noticed a large Love Hina box sitting on display in his bookcase. Being a curious cat, I said "Mau, what's that?"

"A Love Hina video game." I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

"Wha- what kind of game is it?" I asked already dreading the answer I knew it was.

"It's a dating sim." I smiled. At least I think I smiled; I tried damn hard to convert my cringe into something positive.

"A dating sim?" I prompted, in an attempt to speed the conversation along. For those that know my tastes in anime, something such as Love Hina just doesn't agree with me. It might be the fandom that is associated with that genre of shonen anime. These are the people who have Narusagawa body pillows with easy to clean sections.

Now they have a game as well. This game is every bit as bad as the TV series was to me. I listened to one scenario being described where you (the manager of the Inn) want to get Naru a present. For some god awful reason (commonly called fanservice) you decide to get her some undergarments. To do this, you must then take her measurements while she is asleep.

Maybe I am wrong and some people really dig this stuff. Personally, I think I would have more fun trying to hang myself with a dirty sock.

Charles then pulled out the enormous box of softcore anime porn and explained that in Japan they theme some of their toys. I nodded to this, because one part of me was amused while the other part was clawing desperately at the side of my head to escape. Anyway, the Love Hina game comes with: Miniatures, a small bath you can stand the characters in, official Love Hina chopsticks, and a towel.

The towel has Naru in a provocative pose.

I tried not to think of the body pillows as I looked at the towel. I hid a small sigh of relief as we moved back away from the game and talking about the server and other nerdy things. That's not saying Charles is a bad person, but more an expression of my dislike of Love Hina. My god, they have a video game for it. I think it will be a mix of laughing and crying if they were to ever do a Goldenboy game.
